Municipal Information Technology

The Municipal Information Technology (MIT) Department is the nerve center of the City of Mobile, responsible for directing, controlling, and operating the city's vast technology resources. This essential department works largely behind the scenes to ensure that all other city departments have the digital tools and support they need to serve the public effectively, securely, and efficiently.

From managing the city's network and Cybersecurity to developing internal applications and supporting every city employee's hardware and software, MIT's mission is to provide the technological foundation for a modern, responsive, and forward-thinking city government.

Core Function

The MIT Department provides critical support across the entire spectrum of city operations through its specialized divisions.

Key Services

Systems Support

This is the core of the department, responsible for administering the city's network, servers, and database systems. This team also leads the city's cybersecurity efforts to protect sensitive data and manages all end-user hardware (like computers and phones) and software. The HelpDesk, which provides direct technical support to city employees, is a key function of this division.

Business Process and Applications

This division focuses on improving how the city works. They support and extend the functionality of the city's main enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, which handles core business functions. They also design, develop, and support other internal applications that help departments operate more efficiently.

Communications and Information Services

MIT ensures that information flows smoothly, both within the city government and to the public. This includes supporting communication systems and making information accessible through innovative public-facing tools.

Public-Facing Technology

MIT is instrumental in developing and maintaining the technology that citizens use to interact with the city. This includes the Customer Self-Service (CSS) portal for permits and business licenses, and the Text My Gov service, which allows citizens to get information and report issues via a simple text message.

My Pledge to You

As your elected official, I will ensure that our city's technological infrastructure is robust, secure, and future-proof. I pledge to:

Prioritize Cybersecurity

I will advocate for the necessary funding and resources to protect the city's digital assets and citizens' private data from evolving cyber threats.

Enhance Digital Services for Citizens

I will support MIT in developing and improving online tools that make interacting with the city easier and more convenient for all residents and business owners.

Invest in Our Internal Infrastructure

I will work to ensure that our city employees have the modern and reliable technology they need to do their jobs efficiently, which translates to better service for the public.

Promote Data-Driven Governance

I will support MIT's efforts to leverage data analytics to help the city make smarter, more informed decisions about resource allocation and future planning.
