Build Mobile
The Build Mobile department is the city's cornerstone for safe, sustainable, and high-quality growth. It is responsible for ensuring the best possible development and living environment for all residents and businesses by fairly administering the city's codes, ordinances, and long-range plans. From home renovations to new commercial construction, Build Mobile guides the process to ensure our city grows in a way that is smart, resilient, and true to its character.
Serving as the central hub for construction, planning, and development, the department's mission is to facilitate growth while preserving the unique fabric of our historic city. It works to make the development process transparent, efficient, and accessible for everyone.
Core Function
Build Mobile is a comprehensive department composed of several divisions, each handling a critical part of the city's development process.
Key Services
Permitting
This is the first stop for most construction projects. The permitting division helps residents and contractors submit plans and acquire the necessary approvals to begin work, ensuring all projects meet city standards. The city has recently upgraded its online permitting portal, CSS, to improve security and user experience.
Inspections
The inspections team ensures that construction work is performed safely and according to the approved plans and building codes. They conduct inspections at various stages of a project to protect property owners and the public.
Planning and Zoning
This division manages how land is used throughout the city, guided by the "Map for Mobile" comprehensive plan. It oversees zoning regulations, subdivision of land, and signage to ensure new developments are compatible with the surrounding community and contribute to a connected, vibrant city.
Historic Development
Tasked with preserving Mobile's rich architectural heritage, this division works with the Architectural Review Board (ARB) and the Mobile Historic Development Commission (MHDC) to oversee projects in historic districts, ensuring that renovations and new construction respect the city's unique character.
Long-Range Planning
Looking toward Mobile's future, this team implements the "Map for Mobile" plan, which outlines a vision for the city’s long-term preservation, revitalization, and growth. This includes creating diverse, connected neighborhoods and business centers.

I will champion policies that ensure all areas of Mobile see the benefits of new investment and that the development process is fair and accessible to everyone.
