Environmental Services

The City of Mobile's Environmental Services Department is on the front lines of creating a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable community. This vital department manages the city's waste collection, recycling programs, and stormwater quality initiatives to protect our natural resources and enhance the quality of life for all residents. From ensuring timely trash pickup to preventing pollution in our local waterways, Environmental Services plays a crucial role in maintaining Mobile's health and beauty.

The department's mission is twofold: to provide reliable and efficient services for waste management and to educate and empower the public to be stewards of our environment. By combining robust city-led programs with community engagement, they are building a cleaner future for Mobile.

Core Function

Environmental Services delivers a wide range of essential programs designed to keep Mobile clean and protect its waterways.

Key Services

Trash and Garbage Collection

The department oversees the city's contracts for curbside collection of household garbage and trash, such as yard debris.

Recycling Centers

To provide residents with a convenient way to recycle, the city operates two drop-off recycling locations: the Pinehill Recycle Center (2460 Government Street) and the WAC Recycle Center (4851 Museum Drive).

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Events

At least once a year, the department hosts HHW collection events where citizens can safely dispose of items like old paint, chemicals, and electronics that cannot go into regular trash. Scrap tire collection events are also held periodically.

Stormwater Management

A major focus of the department is managing stormwater runoff to prevent pollution in Mobile's streams and Mobile Bay. This involves public education, enforcing stormwater ordinances, and maintaining the storm drain system. The city's Storm Water Management Program Plan (SWMPP) is publicly available and updated annually.

Environmental Enforcement

The department investigates illicit discharges into the storm drain system, such as blowing leaves or dumping chemicals, and issues Notices of Violation to educate offenders and prevent future pollution.

My Pledge to You

As your elected official, I will be a dedicated advocate for a cleaner, greener Mobile and will work to strengthen our Environmental Services. I pledge to:

Expand and Improve Recycling

I will explore opportunities to make recycling more accessible and convenient for all residents, with the long-term goal of re-establishing a city-wide curbside recycling program.

Aggressively Combat Litter and Illegal Dumping

I will support increased funding for litter cleanup initiatives and stronger enforcement against illegal dumping to keep our streets and neighborhoods beautiful.

Invest in Modern Stormwater Infrastructure

I will champion proactive investments in our storm drain system to prevent flooding and protect Mobile Bay from polluted runoff.

Enhance Public Awareness Campaigns

I will work to ensure all Mobilians understand their role in protecting our environment through targeted and effective public education campaigns.
