Historic Development Department

Historic Development

The City of Mobile's Historic Development Department plays a crucial role in preserving the rich architectural and cultural tapestry of the city for residents and visitors alike. This department works diligently to protect Mobile's historic resources, ensuring that its unique character is maintained for generations to come.

The Historic Development Department is a key component of the city's "Build Mobile" initiative. Its primary responsibility is to support the Mobile Historic Development Commission (MHDC) and the Architectural Review Board (ARB).

Core Function

While the department operates under the broader mission of the "Build Mobile" department to improve the city's living environment, its core purpose is intrinsically linked to the mission of the Mobile Historic Development Commission which is to advocate for the preservation of historically significant buildings, structures, sites, and objects in the city of Mobile.

Key Services

Architectural Review

The department guides property owners through the process of obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for any exterior alterations to buildings in historic districts, ensuring that all work adheres to established guidelines.

Historic Marker Program

The "Banner & Shield" program recognizes well-preserved and restored properties, educating the public about the historical significance of the buildings and their original owners. The shield itself represents the six flags that have flown over Mobile.

Educational Outreach

The department offers educational programs, such as the annual Preservation Class, to inform residents about Mobile's architecture, history, and the importance of preservation. These non-technical classes cover a range of topics, from the review process to the practicalities of living in a historic district.

Resource and Research

The department serves as a vital resource for property owners, researchers, and the general public, providing information on the history of buildings and best practices for their preservation.
