Special Events

The City of Mobile Special Events Department is dedicated to increasing the quality of life for citizens and visitors through the production of quality special events. This mission reflects Mobile’s vibrant cultural heritage, leveraging events to foster community pride, attract tourism, and support economic growth.
The department collaborates with local organizations and city infrastructure teams to execute festivals and celebrations, aligning with broader civic goals of inclusivity and public engagement.

Core Function

These events significantly enhance Mobile’s social fabric, providing free and paid opportunities for residents to connect. The Greater Gulf State Fair boosts local businesses and tourism, while Ten Sixty Five fosters community spirit across diverse groups. Mardi Gras, with departmental support, reinforces Mobile’s global reputation, drawing millions and supporting local economies.
However, challenges emerge from anecdotal feedback (e.g., social media posts) indicating occasional issues like traffic congestion, limited parking, or accessibility barriers for those with disabilities. Outreach to outlying areas, such as District 1, also appears inconsistent, potentially leaving some residents underserved.

Key Services

Event Permitting and Application Assistance

For temporary gatherings or organized activities with 100 or more people that involve city property, city resources, or elements like temporary structures and sound amplification, an event services application is required. The city offers an online Event Services Planning and Application Tool to guide organizers through this process.

Park Rentals

For smaller events with less than 100 attendees, such as birthday parties and family gatherings, the department facilitates park rental applications.

Coordination of City Resources

The department helps event organizers coordinate necessary city services, including police for security, sanitation for cleanup, and traffic engineering for street closures.

My Pledge to You

As your elected official, I will be a steadfast champion for the City of Mobile's Special Events Department and the vital role it plays in our community. I pledge to:

Enhance and Expand Community Events

I will work to secure the resources needed to not only continue our beloved traditions but also to develop new and innovative events that celebrate the diversity and talent of our city.

Further Streamline the Permitting Process

I will support continued efforts to make the event application and permitting process as efficient and user-friendly as possible for residents, community groups, and businesses.

Promote Volunteerism and Community Involvement

I will advocate for the creation of a dedicated "Special Events Volunteer Corps" to provide residents with more opportunities to be directly involved in the planning and execution of our city's celebrations.

Champion Public-Private Partnerships

I will actively seek out and foster partnerships with local businesses and organizations to enhance the quality and sustainability of our city's events.
